Want to try pottery? A pinch pot is the easiest DIY pottery craft for beginners: a ball of clay, your two hands, and about 30 minutes. No wheel, no kiln knowledge, no special tools needed to begin.

Pinching is one of the oldest pottery techniques in the world. Potters in Japan, Korea and Thailand have shaped tea bowls and everyday cups this way for centuries. At Nendohuis, our pottery studio in Rotterdam, every beginner pottery workshop and pottery class starts with this same method. Below is the exact step-by-step process we teach at our tables.

What you need

You need very little to make your first pinch pot:

  • Clay: a fist-sized piece of soft, well-wedged clay (stoneware works well).
  • Your hands: the main tools for pinching and smoothing.
  • A damp sponge: for cleaning and smoothing the surface at the end.
  • A wooden plank or board: a work surface the clay won't stick to.
  • Slip and a scoring tool (optional): slip is clay glue, used if you add a handle or foot ring.

Before you start, divide your clay into five roughly equal parts. You will use four parts for the pot and keep one part aside for a handle, foot ring or decoration.

How to make a pinch pot: step by step : Easy DIY Pottery Craft for Beginners

  1. Roll a ball. Take four of your five parts of clay and roll them between your palms into a smooth, round ball. A ball without cracks or folds gives you an even start.
  2. Press your thumb into the center. Hold the ball in one hand. Push the thumb of your other hand straight down into the middle. Stop about 1 cm from the bottom so the base stays thick enough.
  3. Pinch the wall. Pinch the clay gently between your thumb (inside) and index finger (outside). Start at the bottom and work your way up to thin the wall.
  4. Pinch and rotate. After each pinch, turn the pot a little and pinch again, working in a spiral. Keep the pressure the same each time. An even wall thickness is the most important part of the whole process.
  5. Support the outside. While you pinch, cup the outside of the pot with your other hand. This keeps the shape round and stops the wall from flaring out too fast.
  6. Smooth the inside. Run your thumb around the inside in slow circles to smooth it. Check the wall as you go: it should be between 5 and 8 mm thick all over.
  7. Add a handle or foot ring (optional). Roll the fifth part of clay into a coil. Shape it into a handle or a ring. Score both surfaces, add slip, press them together, and smooth a thin coil around the joint for a seamless join.
  8. Finish the surface. Wipe the pot with a damp sponge to smooth fingerprints and soften the rim. You can also press gentle texture into the wall with your fingertips.
